Hearing Aid

"He goeth before them, and the sheep follow him; for they know his voice." Jn. 10:4

Esau got the look down enough to fool a man who was nearly blind, but he had trouble with the voice. Isaac's instincts made him question the identity of the one who stood before him. He said the "voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau" Gen. 27:22.  Too bad the instinct and appetite for "savory food, such as I love" was stronger than his inclination.

Our love of venison can cloud our other senses. A stomach can stop a heart for God. Paul warned the Philippians about enemies of the soul "whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.) Phil 3:19.

One danger is in "getting in front" of the shepherd and failing to follow him. A sheep who not being led by the shepherd is being led by its belly. Soon, the poor creature is far away and alone. Eat, dear one, but never get out of hearing distance of "his voice."

The second danger is letting how we feel cast the deciding vote.  It "felt" like Esau.  Feelings were wrong.

Listen for the Shepherd's voice and follow him.

Everything that drowns his voice
Is nothing less than vice
Though your heart is set on venison
Loss of faith is not worth the price
